Severance Agreements

It is important that employees understand all the terms of a severance agreement before deciding whether to accept the agreement.

SEVERANCe Agreements

Employees sometimes receive severance agreements when they are separated from their jobs.  These agreements usually specify the amount of monetary compensation an employee will receive upon separation from the employer.  The agreements can also indicate any continuing obligations the employee has to the employer.  A severance agreement may also provide a certain time period during which the employee must accept the agreement. Above all, severance agreements will outline the rights that the employee will give up, or release, by signing the agreement.  By accepting the severance agreement, the employee will give up any right to make legal claims against the employer for any discrimination or other unlawful activity that occurred during the employee’s tenure with the employer.

It is important that employees understand all the terms of a severance agreement before deciding whether to accept the agreement.  An employee may have questions about the agreement.  Or an employee may want to change parts of the agreement.

If you have been separated from your job, and have received a severance agreement, you may still be in shock.  You may also be feeling afraid or even angry.   Those feelings are normal.  But do not let those feelings prevent you from seeking assistance with understanding your rights and obligations under the severance agreement.

Rambsy Law is here to assist you in understanding the implications of your severance agreement.  You may have questions about any negotiating power that you have to change the agreement.  You may also have questions about whether you should even sign the agreement.  Schedule a consult with Rambsy Law to discuss these and other issues related to a severance agreement you have received.
